Agents paying college athletes is an issue that isn’t going away anytime soon.  The LA Times  covers a recent hearing at the LA Coliseum investigates the issue, as the proposed legislation is intended to add some teeth the rules already on the books.  It’s going to continue being a  state issue, but with politicians and lawmakers involved at this point, they have potentially found further incentive to begin enforcing these rules into the future:  Political gain……..wrapped in the “Protecting Student Athletes from Unscrupulous Athlete Agents” billing.

Great news from Franklin McNeil on ESPN.com, covering the recent announcement that the UFC has elected to increase the insurance coverage it currently offers for fighters.  This means more than getting dental and vision, as the new coverages also include accident insurance to cover the fighters in case they are injured during training.  This is a huge step forward for the UFC and its competitors, and excellent news for these deserving athletes.

And as the First Round gets underway, my mind begins to wonder back towards the harsh reality of today’s football landscape, and what that now means for these young men so eager to begin their careers.  Not the delayed contract talks and missed workouts.  Instead my thoughts turn to the financial changes certain to affect every single first rounders and their dollars lost.

Let’s take Jake Locker for example.  Follow
